Step One: Write Job Descriptions That Attract the Right People


If you’ve ever posted a job and felt like nobody who applied actually read it, you’re not alone. The truth is, most job descriptions read like a list of demands instead of an invitation to collaborate.


The goal isn’t to scare people off, it’s to make the right people say, “That sounds like me.”

Here’s how:


  • Keep it short and clear. List only what’s necessary.

  • Focus on what success looks like in the role, not just the tasks.

  • Add a short paragraph about your company culture or what you believe in.

  • Be honest about the type of person who thrives with you — fast-paced, creative, detail-driven, flexible, etc.


When you write like a human, you attract humans.



Step Two: Screen for Skill and Fit


A good hire has to do more than just check boxes. They have to understand your rhythm and values.


When reviewing applicants, look beyond the résumé. Notice how they communicate. Are they thoughtful? Do they follow directions? Do they seem like someone who would genuinely care about what you’re building?


During interviews, ask questions that show you how they think, not just what they know. Things like:


  • Tell me about a time you solved a problem nobody expected you to.

  • What kind of environment helps you do your best work?

  • What does good communication look like to you?


These small shifts reveal far more than “what are your strengths and weaknesses” ever could.



Step Three: Onboard with Intention


The first few weeks set the tone for everything that comes after. If you want someone to care about your business, start by caring about their experience.


Send a welcome email before day one. Share who they’ll be working with, what to expect, and where to go with questions. Create a simple onboarding packet or checklist so they’re not left wondering what they missed.


It’s not about being fancy. It’s about being clear. Structure helps people feel safe, confident, and ready to contribute.
